The symposium is based at the University of Latvia Recreation and Conference Complex "Ratnieki", located within Gauja National Park.
The complex is in the heart of Vidzeme, approximately one hour drive from Riga, surrounded by the scenic landscapes of Gauja National Park. It offers a spacious countryside setting with facilities suitable for both large-scale events and smaller, more focused gatherings.
The estate comprises six historic buildings featuring seminar and conference rooms, accommodation and extensive outdoor infrastructure. Guests can enjoy a nature trail that winds through old-growth forest across the area's rolling hills and valleys.
The estate is an important part of Latvia's cultural heritage. It was once owned by the prominent industrialist and philanthropist Roberts Hiršs, widely known as the "Wool and Silk King of Latvia". In 1972 he donated the estate to the University of Latvia, ensuring its preservation and continued public use.

Most meals will be provided on site, with options available to accommodate participants with specific dietary requirements.
Travel to Latvia
The nearest international airport is Riga International Airport. From the airport, Bus No. 22 provides a convenient connection to Riga city centre in approximately 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a taxi or rent a car directly at the airport.
Getting to Ratnieki
By car · Symposium shuttle · Transfer from Sigulda
Ratnieki can be reached by private or rental car, or by the Symposium shuttle bus, which will depart from Riga to Ratnieki on Sunday, 22 August, and return from Ratnieki to Riga on Saturday, 28 August.
The participation fee includes a seat on the shared Symposium shuttle bus. Participants travelling by bus will meet at the Latvian National Museum of Natural History in Riga before departing together for Ratnieki. The exact departure time and meeting arrangements will be communicated to all registered participants in advance.
If the shuttle schedule does not fit your travel plans, a transfer can be arranged from the nearest transport hub — Sigulda Railway Station or Sigulda Bus Station. Participants requiring a transfer are asked to contact the organisers in advance at iffslatvia@gmail.com.
Most areas of the venue, as well as many of the accommodation rooms, are accessible to people with disabilities or other accessibility needs. We will do our best to ensure that all participants feel comfortable and are able to fully enjoy the event.
Before and after the symposium
Ideas for additional excursions and sightseeing opportunities across Latvia will be published before the symposium. Participants are encouraged to explore Riga's historic centre, cultural attractions and museums before the event. After the symposium, we invite you to discover the landscapes of Gauja National Park, including sandstone cliffs, forests, medieval castles and hiking trails, as well as Latvia's other natural and cultural heritage sites.
